Karnataka's Home Minister G Parameshwara announced that the state government will review a recent claim by the Waqf Board on approximately 1,500 acres of land in Vijayapura where notices were issued to local farmers to vacate their ancestral lands.
This move sparked protests as farmers presented land records asserting ownership and alleged the records had been altered in favor of the Waqf Board following a visit by Housing and Waqf Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan. BJP leader Tejasvi Surya voiced strong opposition claiming the Waqf Board’s actions lacked evidence and seemed designed to bypass proposed amendments to the Waqf Act by the central government.
The Karnataka government along with the revenue department is set to examine historical records to decide on the matter amidst increasing tensions between farmers and the state authorities over the legitimacy of these land claims.
