Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) today at a ceremony led by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10 a.m. His tenure as CJI will extend until May 13, 2025.
Justice Khanna has been a significant part of various landmark judgments, including rulings on the cancellation of electoral bonds, upholding the reliability of EVMs, the revocation of Article 370, and granting interim bail to former Delhi CM Kejriwal. He has served as a Supreme Court judge since January 18, 2019.
Justice Chandrachud’s Impactful Tenure Ends
Justice D.Y. Chandrachud's two-year tenure as CJI concluded on Sunday. Known for his participation in critical decisions such as the Ayodhya land dispute, decriminalization of Section 377 (homosexuality), and Article 370’s abrogation, he contributed to over 38 constitutional benches and delivered more than 500 judgments. His reforms in the judiciary, including the establishment of a new statue of Lady Justice holding both scales and the Constitution, reflect his lasting influence on the Supreme Court.
