National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah has criticized the BJP, alleging that Jammu and Kashmir was downgraded to a Union Territory due to its Muslim-majority status. In a statement today he accused the ruling party of using Pakistan as a constant scapegoat to divert attention from their own failures.
"Every time they bring up Pakistan," Abdullah said.
"They make mistakes themselves and then accuse us of being connected to Pakistan. They even claim that the alliance between Rahul Gandhi and me is backed by Pakistan. Why would we have anything to do with Pakistan? I believe they are the ones who are more aligned with Pakistan, yet they label us as a threat", he continued.
Addressing the abrogation of Article 370, Abdullah questioned the BJP's assertion that the special status was fueling terrorism. "They said Article 370 was responsible for terrorism, but now they are in power—has terrorism ended?" he asked.
He further argued that Jammu and Kashmir's conversion into a Union Territory was a direct consequence of its Muslim-majority demographics.
"Because this is a Muslim-majority state they made it a Union Territory and divided the region," Abdullah claimed.
