The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has ordered schools and colleges to celebrate Janmashtami sparking a debate with the Congress. Congress MLA Arif Masood criticized the directive arguing that educational institutions should focus solely on academics and maintain a neutral environment free from compulsory religious celebrations.
In response, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav defended the order emphasizing the cultural and historical significance of Janmashtami in the state and arguing that such celebrations promote unity.
Yadav cited various local sites associated with Lord Krishna and announced plans to develop them as pilgrimage destinations. He questioned why the Congress opposes celebrating Janmashtami in educational institutions but does not object to celebrations in other Krishna-associated cities like Mathura.
BJP state president V. D. Sharma challenged the Congress to openly declare whether it opposes celebrating Janmashtami altogether.
