External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified that his upcoming visit to Pakistan is for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit not to discuss India-Pakistan relations. He emphasized that his attendance is part of India’s role as a responsible SCO member.
Jaishankar noted the media interest due to the sensitive India-Pakistan relationship but reiterated that his focus will be on the multilateral event. He acknowledged that Pakistan, like India, is a relatively new member of the SCO and that the summit traditionally attended by heads of government will take place in Islamabad.
Jaishankar also stressed the importance of thorough preparation for such events. India received Pakistan’s invitation for the summit, which is scheduled for October 15-16, 2024. In May 2023, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister visited India for an SCO meeting, marking the first such visit in six years. The SCO is an international organization with nine member states, including India and Pakistan.
