Ahead of the June 4 counting day for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 the Election Commission of India announced that India set a world record with 642 million voters participating.
Remarkably 312 million women voted in the seven-phase elections.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar shared about this achievement in a press conference.
He mentioned that the 642 million voters is a world record and is 1.5 times the number of voters in all G7 countries combined.
Kumar also explained that this comparison is based on the number of voters not electors and pointed out that India's voter turnout was 2.5 times that of the 27 countries in the European Union.
Kumar even mentioned that the 312 million women voters is the highest number ever recorded globally surpassing both the total and women voter turnout of the 2019 elections.
The ECI gave a standing ovation to all voters celebrating this extraordinary show of democratic participation.
