Indian business icon Ratan Tata, known for his values-driven leadership, has passed away at the age of 87. After being hospitalized due to health issues, he died shortly after midnight on Wednesday. Ratan Tata served as the Chairman of Tata Group and Tata Sons for a long time and later continued his leadership as the head of Tata Charitable Trusts. He was honored with India's second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008 and the Padma Bhushan in 2000.
Tata Sons officially announced that Ratan Tata passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where he was battling illness.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock and grief over Ratan Tata’s death, describing him as a visionary businessman and a kind-hearted individual. Modi praised Tata for his unwavering leadership of the business giant and his dedication to the welfare of society.
Born on December 28, 1937, to Naval Tata and Sooni Tata, Ratan Tata led Tata Group as Chairman from 1990 to 2012. A graduate of Cornell University with a degree in architecture, he was highly respected for his business acumen and philanthropy.
Ratan Tata’s journey was remarkable. After studying at Cornell, he joined the Tata Group in 1961, starting on the shop floor of Tata Steel. He later took over as Chairman of Tata Sons following the retirement of J.R.D. Tata. Known as one of the world's largest philanthropists, Tata donated 65% of his income to charitable causes. His name became synonymous with ethical business practices.
Ratan Tata's connection to the Tata legacy is notable. His father, Naval Tata, was adopted by the family of Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata. Ratan Tata was raised by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, after his parents separated when he was just ten years old.
