The Taj Mahal, a magnificent Mughal-era monument, attracts significant attention and admiration. Tourists, both domestic and international, flock to the iconic structure located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Currently, the Taj Mahal is under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Over the past five years, there has been a significant increase in the number of visitors to this stunning monument.
Among the heritage structures managed by the ASI, the Taj Mahal stands at the top in terms of ticket sales. According to Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who shared this information in a written response in the Rajya Sabha, the Taj Mahal is the highest-earning monument through ticket sales. The minister also provided details about the revenue generated from ticket sales for various ASI-managed sites over the last five years.
For the period from 2019 to 2024, the minister presented the data regarding the income generated from ASI-managed monuments. The Taj Mahal, unsurprisingly, topped the list. Other ASI-managed sites generating significant income include Agra Fort, Qutub Minar in Delhi, Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, and the Sun Temple in Konark.
Built in the 17th century by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan along the banks of the Yamuna River, the Taj Mahal remains one of the most visited monuments in the world.
