The government plans to introduce three bills to implement simultaneous elections. Two of these bills will amend the Constitution. One amendment will align local body elections with the Lok Sabha and state assemblies needing approval from 50% of states.
The first amendment proposes changes to hold Lok Sabha and assembly elections together by amending Article 82A and Article 83(2) regarding election dates and terms. The second amendment focuses on simultaneous local body elections requiring 50% state ratification and will introduce Article 324A to coordinate election rolls between the Election Commission and State Election Commissions.
The third bill will amend existing laws for Union territories aligning their legislative terms with the Lok Sabha and assemblies. This ordinary bill will not need constitutional changes. The government accepted recommendations for phased simultaneous elections, with Lok Sabha and assembly polls in phase one and local body elections 100 days later along with a common electoral roll system for smoother coordination between election bodies.
