Senior AAP leader and Delhi Minister Kailash Gahlot resigned today citing growing tensions within the party. The discord began on August 15 when Delhi’s Independence Day flag hoisting ceremony became a point of contention. With CM Arvind Kejriwal in jail Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena intervened and assigned the task to Gahlot instead of Atishi as originally directed by Kejriwal. This move sparked a conflict between the Delhi government and the LG’s office.
The AAP accused the LG of undermining its authority, while Gahlot’s compliance strained his relationship with Kejriwal. In December, Gahlot was also stripped of the law department, further escalating tensions.
In his resignation letter, Gahlot criticized AAP for prioritizing political ambitions over its promises, such as cleaning the Yamuna River, and for becoming mired in controversies. The BJP used Gahlot’s resignation to attack AAP’s internal issues and failure to deliver for Delhi.
