Fresh Violence Erupts in Manipur, One Killed Amid Tensions

The northeastern state of Manipur is once again witnessing unrest. After a brief lull, violence has reignited between the Kuki and Meitei communities. Protests in the lowland areas turned violent on Sunday, leading to the death of a 20-year-old youth and injuries to another during clashes in Jiribam district.

Security forces fired shots to disperse protestors at Babupura, where the situation escalated around 11 PM. Protestors attacked party offices of BJP and Congress near the Jiribam police station, looting furniture and setting the offices ablaze. Security forces were deployed to control the situation, but tensions remain high in the district.

The injured person is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. In response to the escalating violence, curfews have been imposed, and internet services have been suspended across seven districts to curb further unrest.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to hold a high-level meeting today (Monday) to address the situation in Manipur. Senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Northeast Division, Intelligence Bureau, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and Assam Rifles are expected to participate in the discussion.

This latest surge in violence follows a recent attack by Kuki militants on a police station in Jiribam district, which led to a gunfight resulting in the deaths of 11 Kuki militants. Subsequently, six Meitei individuals were reportedly abducted and killed by the militants, fueling further anger and protests in the region.
