BJP MLA Rekha Gupta is set to take on the responsibility as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. She was elected for the first time as an MLA from the Shalimar Bagh assembly constituency in Delhi. Political experts are stating that after becoming the Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta will face several challenges. The key responsibility of fulfilling the promises made in the party manifesto will now fall on the new Chief Minister. Currently, Rekha Gupta faces four major challenges, as listed below:
Rs. 2500 in Women’s Accounts As part of its election promises, the BJP announced that by March 8, eligible women beneficiaries would receive Rs. 2,500 in their accounts from the government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made this promise during his election campaign speeches, stating that the money would be credited to women’s accounts on International Women’s Day, March 8. Experts believe this will be a significant challenge for the government under Rekha Gupta's leadership.
Yamuna River Cleaning Previously, the BJP promised to clean the Yamuna River. Pollution in the Yamuna was a major topic of discussion during the election campaign. The BJP promised that they would do what the Congress and AAP could not do while in power regarding the river’s cleanliness. Industrial waste and untreated sewage from unauthorized drains have contributed to the pollution in the Yamuna River. Cleaning the river will be a major test for the new government.
Funding for Schemes The BJP had previously promised to continue the subsidies offered by the AAP government, including free electricity, water, and bus travel for women. The new government will have to resolve the issues related to central government projects such as the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and the Delhi Metro. Experts are expressing concerns that raising the funds for these projects may become a burden on the new BJP government in Delhi.
Road Repairs and Relief from Garbage Piles Due to the ongoing disputes between the AAP government and the Lieutenant Governor, several infrastructure development projects in the city were stalled, including road repairs and garbage collection. For these tasks, the BJP government will need to allocate significant funds for urban development. BJP sources have stated that proposals related to these projects were ready even before the Delhi BJP government took office.
