An incident of firing occurred near the gate of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, on Tuesday morning. Former Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal was performing voluntary service (seva) at the temple gate as part of a religious punishment decreed by Sikh religious authorities.
A gunman attempted to shoot Badal, but his associates, along with other leaders present, managed to stop the assailant. Some bullets were reportedly fired, but Badal escaped unharmed. A video of the incident has been released, showing the attacker pulling out a revolver and firing as he approached Badal.
Badal, wearing a sign around his neck and carrying a symbolic stick as part of his religious duties, was performing seva at the gate with other leaders. This was mandated by the Akal Takht Sahib as a religious reprimand for alleged violations of Sikh principles.
The assailant, identified as Narayan Singh Chawra from Gurdaspur district, was apprehended on the spot. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack and the circumstances leading to it.
