Malti Verma, a 58 year old teacher in Agra tragically died after falling victim to a phone scam. On Monday she received a WhatsApp call from a man pretending to be a police official claiming her daughter was caught in a sex racket. He demanded Rs 1 lakh to prevent her daughter from being implicated.
Panicked, Ms. Verma called her son Dipanshu who quickly realized it was a scam after seeing the +92 prefix on the caller’s number. Despite reassuring her that her daughter was safe Ms. Verma became increasingly anxious and unwell. After returning home from school her health deteriorated and she passed away.
The family believes her heart attack was triggered by the stress from the scam. The police are investigating the case based on the family’s complaint with promises of further action.
