An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struck Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Noida early Monday morning at 5:36 AM. According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter was 5 km deep near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. The tremors caused panic among residents, with many rushing out of their homes as buildings shook.
Following the earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued an appeal to the public. A few hours after the tremors, he took to social media platform X (Twitter), urging people to stay alert and follow safety precautions.
"Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. I urge everyone to remain calm and take necessary precautions. There is a possibility of aftershocks, so please stay vigilant. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation," the Prime Minister posted.
As of now, no casualties or damage have been reported. However, this is not the first time an earthquake has struck Delhi. In 2015, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the region. In 2020, Delhi witnessed multiple tremors:
April 12 – Magnitude 3.5
May 10 – Magnitude 3.4
May 29 – Magnitude 4.4 (near Rohtak, 50 km west of Delhi)
Delhi falls under Seismic Zone 4 on India's Earthquake Zoning Map, making it moderately to highly vulnerable due to seismic activity from the Himalayan region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation for any further tremors.
