A controversy erupted after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi allegedly made remarks about U.S. President Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities.
Medical professionals from the National Medicos Organisation Bharat (NMO-Bharat) called for a public apology criticizing his comments as “insensitive” and “harmful.” Dr. C.B. Tripathi, President of NMO-Bharat, wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi, calling the remarks disrespectful and ageist, warning that they could spread misinformation about cognitive health.
Gandhi made the comments on November 16, during a rally in Maharashtra, comparing Prime Minister Modi’s memory loss to that of a “former U.S. President,” reportedly Biden. The medical fraternity expressed concern that such statements reinforce harmful stereotypes about aging and undermine the contributions of older individuals. They urged Gandhi to issue a public apology, emphasizing that leaders must make respectful and informed statements to avoid perpetuating misconceptions.
