Violence broke out in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, leading to the deaths of three Dalit Hindus and injuries to several others. Over 150 people were arrested, and police used tear gas, lathi charges, and stun grenades to control the situation. The Calcutta High Court ordered central forces to help restore order, while BSF confirmed attacks on their teams.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep concern over the violence, claiming Dalit Hindus were being killed to prevent them from benefitting from land previously taken under Waqf claims. He accused political parties like Congress, TMC, and Samajwadi Party of exploiting the poor and marginalised by occupying their lands.
Yogi highlighted that large tracts of land have been taken under the Waqf name without proper documentation. He alleged that violence is being incited to resist the government's efforts to reclaim such lands.
