Crisis Deepens for Biren Singh Government in Manipur

Amid prolonged unrest and a year-and-a-half-long crisis in Manipur, BJP-led Chief Minister Biren Singh's government faces mounting challenges. Internal dissent within the party and coalition partners, coupled with discontent from the central leadership over his governance, has triggered alarm bells. The crisis escalated further when over 25 NDA members skipped Monday's meeting chaired by Biren Singh.

NPP Withdraws Support, Adding to Turmoil

The National People's Party (NPP), an NDA ally, withdrew its support on Sunday, citing Biren Singh's failure in handling the Jiribam district incident. NPP chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that his party would reconsider its stance only if Biren Singh was removed from office. This withdrawal by NPP's seven members has weakened the coalition. In response, Biren Singh hastily convened a meeting on Monday night, but 11 MLAs were notably absent.

Call for Action Against Kuki Militants

NDA MLAs have demanded a large-scale operation against Kuki militants, whom they blame for the recent violence and loss of innocent lives. In a meeting attended by 27 MLAs on Monday night, a unanimous resolution was passed to launch an offensive against the militants. Meanwhile, hundreds of Kuki supporters held a demonstration in Churachandpur district with empty coffins as a symbolic protest.

Congress Demands Presidential Intervention

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has urged President Droupadi Murmu to intervene in the Manipur crisis. The party has called for immediate action to address the state's deteriorating law and order situation.
