Asaram Bapu, who is serving a life sentence in a 2013 rape case, has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court until March 31 on medical grounds.
A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal noted that Asaram is suffering from heart-related ailments and age-related health issues. He is currently undergoing treatment at a healthcare facility in Jodhpur.
The Supreme Court has directed that security personnel be deployed to monitor him during his bail period. In 2018, a Jodhpur court found Asaram guilty of repeatedly raping a female disciple at his ashram and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
In his petition, Asaram stated that he has already served 11 years in prison and is dealing with serious health concerns, including multiple heart attacks. In February 2024, he experienced severe chest pain and was shifted to AIIMS in Jodhpur for treatment.
