Contradictory stance by JD(U)

Contradictory stance by JD(U)

In November 2023, Nitish Kumar had warned of a statewide agitation if the Union Government did not grant Special Status Category to Bihar. Subsequently, he joined the NDA.

Now, the Nitish-government has passed a resolution at its national executive meeting in New Delhi demanding a special status as well as a special economic package for Bihar.

Immediately after the resolution though, JD (U) spokesperson Tyagi said Nitish Kumar will remain with the NDA and there is no question of switching sides.

Which brings us to the question: How is this even possible?

The first reason is the credibility of Nitish Kumar, a highly mercurial politician, Nitish has been known to switch his loyalties at the drop of a hat. There’s no way, the BJP can take him for granted.

Second, when the special status is the priority issue for Bihar, how can they support the BJP if the latter does not yield to their demand? Special Status cannot be given to Bihar without conceding the demand from Andhra Pradesh, first. Odisha is also in the fray.

Modi 2.0 had categorically rejected demands for special status and said no State in future would be given special status. Will they rescind this policy because of alliance compulsions?

Given all these factors, the statement of JD(U) that they will support NDA irrespective of the special status issue and yet, passing a resolution at the same time shows the fickle or contradictory nature of Nitish Kumar
