Congress Power Struggle in Karnataka: CM Post Sparks Tensions

The Congress party in Karnataka seems to be facing a renewed tussle over the Chief Minister’s chair. Recent remarks by KPCC President and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar have intensified speculation. Amid allegations like the MUDA and Valmiki scams against CM Siddaramaiah, there are reports suggesting the party high command is considering a leadership change. However, critics argue that Congress leaders seem more focused on power struggles than on governance, welfare, or implementing guarantees, which has irked Kannada citizens.

What Did DK Shivakumar Say?

In a recent national media interview, Shivakumar was asked about his future in politics. The anchor queried, “You worked tirelessly to bring the party to power in Karnataka. Will you remain Deputy CM forever?” In response, Shivakumar said, “Why should I always remain Deputy CM? When the party came to power, there was an understanding between me and Siddaramaiah. I can’t reveal the details publicly, but I am waiting for my turn.”

Siddaramaiah Responds

Shivakumar’s remarks on a purported agreement for power-sharing drew widespread attention, prompting CM Siddaramaiah to respond. He denied any such agreement, asserting that no deal had been made prior to Congress coming to power in the state. However, Siddaramaiah also stated that he would abide by any decision made by the Congress high command.

Home Minister Raises Questions

Home Minister G Parameshwara also weighed in on the controversy. Expressing displeasure, he questioned the alleged power-sharing deal. “If you two (CM and Deputy CM) are making agreements among yourselves, then why are the rest of us even here? Let them handle all responsibilities if such a deal exists. I haven’t heard of such an agreement from the party high command, and it doesn’t seem feasible,” Parameshwara remarked, while reiterating his commitment to respecting the party's decisions.

High Command Weighs Options

Amid the ongoing controversies, reports suggest the Congress high command is evaluating social and political factors before making any changes to leadership. Names like DK Shivakumar, BC leader Ramesh Jarkiholi, Dalit leader and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Home Minister Parameshwara are reportedly under consideration for the Chief Minister’s post, should Siddaramaiah be replaced.
