Congress MP Shashi Tharoor supported External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s concerns over the treatment of minorities in Pakistan, calling the situation "extremely disturbing." Tharoor emphasized that India lacks direct dialogue with Pakistan to address these concerns but acknowledged Jaishankar’s remarks as factual.
Jaishankar, speaking in Lok Sabha, detailed 10 cases of minority atrocities in Pakistan during February, including abductions, forced conversions, and police action against Hindu students celebrating Holi. He also highlighted incidents involving Sikhs, Ahmadis, and Christians, citing attacks, forced conversions, and blasphemy charges. He assured that India raises these issues internationally, referencing India's statements at the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly.
A Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) report for early 2025 documented rising abuses against minorities. HRFP President Naveed Walter condemned escalating attacks and forced conversions, citing cases like Wasif Masih, a Christian youth falsely accused and assaulted, underscoring the community’s vulnerability.
