Once the stronghold of Congress, Delhi has seen a drastic shift in political dynamics. Even during the NDA government's rule under BJP leadership from 1998-2004, Delhi Congress remained dominant. The party achieved consecutive victories in Delhi, but today, Congress finds itself barely holding one or two seats in the Delhi Assembly, a far cry from its former glory. It is no longer accurate to say that BJP defeated Congress in Delhi; rather, it is the AAP that has outperformed Congress here.
This situation is not confined to Delhi alone. AAP has consistently dealt blows to Congress in states like Punjab and Haryana as well. While AAP stands in opposition to BJP, it has become a significant challenger to Congress. In Delhi, AAP's dominance is akin to a break on Congress' longstanding rule.
As the Delhi elections approach once again, Congress now faces a dire situation. The party finds itself isolated, with its allies in the alliance backing AAP. Parties like the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena have all announced their support for AAP in Delhi.
This shift reflects the weakening position of Congress in Delhi, which once held sway in elections. Congress can no longer afford to compete on its own terms or broker seat deals with AAP. Its once powerful stature in Delhi is now in decline, with the party left with little strength to challenge AAP directly. If Congress continues to rally against BJP's dominance through divided votes, it could potentially work in favor of the BJP. Ultimately, the struggles of Congress in the national capital are evident and far from over.
