Congress has launched a "Laapataa Ladies" campaign inspired by Kiran Rao's film to criticize the Eknath Shinde government's record on women's safety ahead of the Maharashtra elections. Posters across the state highlight the alarming statistic of "64,000 women missing in a year," featuring silhouettes of Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Fadnavis and Pawar.
This follows public outrage over the sexual abuse case of two schoolgirls in Badlapur. Congress targets Fadnavis responsible for the Home portfolio for acknowledging that 10% of missing women in Maharashtra never return. In response the state government launched the "Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana," providing financial aid to eligible women.
The upcoming elections will be a tough contest between the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP alliance and the Opposition's Maha Vikas Aghadi with Congress aiming to capitalize on women's safety concerns.
