Congress Draws a Zero for the Third Consecutive Election

Congress Draws a Zero for the Third Consecutive Election

In the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) created history with a landslide victory, while the Congress party failed to win even a single seat. The situation remained unchanged in the next Assembly elections five years later, where Congress once again failed to open its account. Shockingly, even after a decade, the party has now suffered the same fate for the third consecutive time in Delhi!

If this had happened elsewhere, it might not have been a big surprise, but Delhi was once considered a Congress stronghold. Even when the party was not in power at the Centre, it ruled Delhi with an iron grip. From 1998 to 2013, for 15 consecutive years, Congress held on to power in the national capital, seemingly unaffected by national political shifts. However, things began to change in 2013.

The Commonwealth Games scam is believed to have marked the beginning of Congress’s downfall in Delhi. Massive corruption allegations surrounding the event surfaced, leading to several high-profile investigations and arrests. Though the party took corrective measures, its image was severely damaged, allowing the BJP to capitalize on the situation. However, Delhi voters shifted their preference towards AAP rather than BJP.

Another major blow for Congress was the corruption allegations against the son of Sheila Dikshit, the party’s three-term Chief Minister of Delhi. With the AAP emerging as the main opposition force in 2013, Congress lost its ground entirely.

Interestingly, AAP initially formed its first government in Delhi with Congress’s support, but within two years, Kejriwal went for re-elections and wiped out Congress completely. Given the challenges of a 10-year rule and continuous BJP attacks, AAP still managed to win 22 seats this time, which is considered remarkable.

However, AAP's image took a hit due to corruption allegations against its key leaders, with some even landing in jail. The BJP saw an opportunity and worked aggressively to secure a win in Delhi. The party even engaged in political discussions with Muslim community leaders, showing its determination to win.

While Congress failed to win any seats, it still played a crucial role in splitting the anti-BJP vote. However, in the end, its achievement remains the same—zero seats for the third consecutive time
