Recently, it was revealed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the state assembly that a boatman family from Prayagraj, who worked during the recent Maha Kumbh, earned around 30 crores. The boatman, Pintoo Mahra, and his family operated about 130 boats near the Triveni Sangam during the 45-day Kumbh Mela, earning a staggering 30 crores. However, the Income Tax Department has now issued notices to the family, demanding that they pay 12.8 crores in taxes as per the Income Tax Act of 1961.
The family was reportedly shocked upon receiving the tax notice. Financial planner and SEBI research analyst A.K. Mandhan responded to the situation, stating that despite earning money, Pintoo Mahra’s family was now facing difficulties. The money was earned by charging around a thousand rupees per ride due to the high demand during the Kumbh Mela, but the subsequent events, including the tax notice, have come as a shock to them.
The Income Tax notice was issued under Section 4 and 68 of the Income Tax Act of 1961, demanding that the family pay 12.8 crores in taxes. Mandhan mentioned that someone unfamiliar with tax slabs is now being forced to pay a large sum. While the family struggled to earn 15,000 rupees a month in the past, they now find themselves facing a hefty tax bill of 12.8 crores in just one year.
