BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government after it tabled the anti-rape bill in the state assembly accusing the TMC of prioritizing political control over justice.
According to Poonawalla, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government under Banerjee’s leadership is more focused on silencing dissent and protecting wrongdoers than on genuinely addressing the issue of sexual violence.
He argued that the bill's intent is not to deliver justice to victims but rather to obscure the truth, shield perpetrators and stifle the voices of those seeking accountability.
Poonawalla claimed that the TMC’s true motive is reflected in a controversial provision of the bill that allegedly aims to imprison journalists which he views as an attempt to curtail press freedom and prevent the media from exposing corruption and injustice. He labeled the TMC’s approach as indicative of a "Tanashahi Mansikta & Culture" (dictatorial mindset and culture).
