With exit polls predicting a BJP-led Mahayuti majority in Maharashtra, focus shifts to the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate. BJP has avoided naming a candidate but speculation surrounds Devendra Fadnavis, especially after his meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
Fadnavis was pivotal in toppling the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government in 2022 by splitting Shiv Sena. Despite BJP's majority Eknath Shinde was made CM, a decision many in the party now regret as it weakened BJP while Shiv Sena (UBT) grew stronger.
Fadnavis is favored for his administrative track record, but his Brahmin background may be a disadvantage in the Maratha-dominated state. Other candidates like Pankaja Munde lack his political stature.
If Mahayuti falls short of numbers BJP may seek Sharad Pawar’s support, leveraging a bitcoin case involving his daughter. Pawar has previously aligned with BJP-linked factions making this Plan B feasible if needed.
