The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued an advisory alerting citizens about a rise in online travel scams, particularly targeting religious pilgrims and domestic tourists.
Cybercriminals are using fake websites, social media handles, and paid search ads to lure people into booking services like helicopter rides to Kedarnath and Char Dham, hotel stays, cab services, and tour packages. These fraudulent platforms appear professional and often use WhatsApp for communication to seem more credible.
The Ministry has urged the public to be cautious and verify websites or service providers before making any payments or sharing personal details. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or fake websites through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Staying alert is especially important during peak travel seasons and for bookings related to popular pilgrimage sites.
