India News
A major development has emerged in the Mahadev Betting App scandal, which came to light during the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections last year. One of the app's promoters, Sourabh Chandrakar, was recently arrested in Dubai. Officials confirmed on Friday that he would soon be extradited to India. Following a request from the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Interpol issued Red Corner Notices against the accused. Chandrakar, along with another promoter, Ravi Uppal, had been detained last year in the UAE.
The ED's investigation into the Mahadev Online Book (MOB) gaming and betting app revealed links between Chandrakar, Uppal, and several high-ranking political figures and officials from Chhattisgarh. So far, authorities have arrested 11 individuals in connection with the case.
Lavish Wedding Expenses
Sourabh Chandrakar's extravagant wedding in February last year in the UAE raised eyebrows. Reports suggest that Rs 200 crore was spent on the event, with a private jet arranged for attendees. An event management company was paid Rs 112 crore through hawala channels, while Rs 42 crore was spent on hotel accommodations alone. A separate party hosted by Ravi Uppal saw Bollywood celebrities in attendance, and payments to these celebrities were reportedly made through hawala funds.
The Mahadev Betting App Scandal
According to the FIR, the Mahadev Betting App was involved in massive corruption, with an estimated Rs 15,000 crore in fraudulent activities. Approximately 67 betting websites and apps were created, allowing users to gamble on sports like cricket, football, and teen patti. Celebrities were reportedly used to promote the app, drawing in unsuspecting individuals. The case came to light after a complaint was filed by social activist Prakash Banker, leading to the registration of the FIR in November 2023 at the Matunga Police Station.
