A canopy collapsed at the passenger pickup area of Rajkot Airport of Gujarat due to heavy rain a day after a tragic incident at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Fortunately no injuries were reported in Rajkot. The collapse occurred during maintenance to remove water buildup and repairs are underway.
Gujarat is experiencing heavy rainfall prompting the deployment of seven National Disaster Response Force teams in various districts.
The New Delhi incident involved the collapse of a Terminal 1 roof section killing a cab driver and injuring eight. Operations at Terminal 1 handling 200 flights daily have been suspended indefinitely.
The cause is suspected to be heavy rain and winds. Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced compensation for victims and ordered structural inspections at all airports. Additionally, Delhi Police filed an FIR for negligence.
A similar incident occurred at Jabalpur Airport, Madhya Pradesh, where a fabric canopy collapse damaged a car but caused no injuries.
The new terminal at Jabalpur Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in March.
