The tussle over the Chief Minister's post has sparked speculations about potential cracks in the Mahayuti. With Eknath Shinde, the incumbent Chief Minister from Shiv Sena, and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, a former CM, both vying for the top position, tensions within the alliance are becoming evident.
While the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 132 seats in the recent elections, Shiv Sena's faction claims credit for the alliance's success under Shinde's leadership. The Sena argues that Shinde should continue as CM, highlighting his governance as a key reason for their victory.
However, BJP insiders believe the time has come for the party to lead the state, given their numerical strength. Fadnavis is seen as the ideal leader to steer Maharashtra forward. This difference in opinion has created a delicate situation, with both parties unwilling to cede ground.
Political observers point out that BJP could potentially form a government with NCP's support if Shiv Sena withdraws, as the NCP holds 41 seats. However, such a move could tarnish BJP’s image and raise questions about its reliability as an ally.
With the current stalemate and no clear resolution in sight, the much-touted unity of the Mahayuti is being tested. Whether a compromise is reached or the alliance risks fragmentation will be seen in the coming days.
