Senior actor Kamal Haasan is at the center of a heated political discussion in Tamil Nadu, with speculation that he may soon enter the Rajya Sabha. Having extended his support to the INDIA alliance during the general elections and actively campaigning for DMK candidates, Kamal played a significant role in the coalition securing all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu. As a result, reports suggest that the DMK is considering nominating him to the Upper House of Parliament.
Six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu are set to become vacant this June. Given Kamal's support during the elections, DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is reportedly keen on sending him to the Rajya Sabha. Adding fuel to the rumors, Tamil Nadu Minister PK Sekar Babu visited Kamal Haasan's residence on Wednesday, further intensifying speculations.
Meanwhile, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) representative Murali Appas has confirmed that their party is set to receive a Rajya Sabha seat. However, he stated that the final decision on who will be nominated rests with party president Kamal Haasan. When asked about the discussions between Kamal and Sekar Babu, Murali declined to share details.
Kamal Haasan founded MNM on February 21, 2018, in Madurai, but the party has struggled to make a significant electoral impact. In the 2019 general elections, despite contesting multiple seats, MNM failed to achieve expected results but managed to secure a 3.72% vote share, particularly in urban centers like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai. However, in rural areas, the party’s candidates lost their deposits.
Similarly, in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, MNM contested but failed to win a single seat. Kamal himself contested from Coimbatore but lost to BJP candidate Vanathi Srinivasan by a margin of 1,728 votes. The party also participated in the 2022 urban local body elections, contesting in 140 seats, but failed to win even one.
Now, with the possibility of a Rajya Sabha nomination, Kamal Haasan’s political journey could take a new turn.
