Vijay Sethupathi's Post Pandemic Record In China

Nithilan Swaminathan’s Tamil action thriller Maharaja, starring Vijay Sethupathi, has become the highest-grossing Indian film in China in five years. Released in November 2024, the film earned Rs 91.55 crore in just over a month, as confirmed by Chinese Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing. Maharaja is the first Indian movie to release in China following the 2024 accord to resolve the Ladakh standoff.

The film had a strong start, earning Rs 15.6 crore on its opening day and achieving a high 8.7/10 rating on Douban, a popular Chinese review site. It follows the story of a barber (Sethupathi) whose visit to a police station reveals unexpected motives.

Maharaja previously earned Rs 100 crore in India after its June release. The movie continues the legacy of Indian films succeeding in China, following hits like Dangal and Andhadhun, and marks a significant cultural milestone post-pandemic.
