Vijay Calls for Nationwide Caste Census

The demand for a caste-based population census across India is gaining momentum. In this context, Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay has strongly advocated for the need to conduct a caste-wise census. He emphasized its importance in ensuring social justice and made a key statement amid ongoing discussions on this issue in Tamil Nadu.

Vijay asserted that various political parties should support caste-based population data to ensure fair representation. He criticized the current ruling leaders for praising social reformer Periyar while simultaneously claiming they lack the authority to conduct such a census. Vijay reminded that Periyar led movements that resulted in constitutional amendments, shaping India’s approach to reservations and social justice.

Highlighting that states like Bihar, Karnataka, and Telangana have already conducted caste-based censuses, Vijay questioned why Tamil Nadu has not taken similar steps. He pointed out that Telangana completed its caste survey within just 50 days and even convened a special legislative session to discuss the findings.

Vijay stressed that caste-based census data is crucial for ensuring equality and social justice. He rejected the ruling government’s argument that they lack the authority to conduct it, instead suggesting that the state government could initiate a caste survey in advance. He also urged the central government to take responsibility for conducting a caste-based census at the national level.

Vijay’s statement is seen as a significant development in the ongoing debate over caste-based population surveys. With various political parties pushing for such data collection, the demand for a caste census is likely to gain further traction in the coming days. Analysts believe that Vijay’s advocacy on this issue may increase pressure on the Tamil Nadu government to take action.
