In December 2023 the release of Vicky Kaushal's 'Sam Bahadur' coincided with Ranbir Kapoor's blockbuster 'Animal' at the box office.
While Kapoor's film made Rs 917.82 crore globally, 'Sam Bahadur' had managed to secure Rs 128.17 crore in earnings establishing itself as a commercial success.
Reflecting on the clash between 'Sam Bahadur' and 'Animal', Kaushal in a recent interview likened the situation to a test match.
"We were aware that 'Sam Bahadur' wasn't the typical masala entertainer like 'Animal' and it had a different appeal and we knew it would make waves at the box office. We understood that it required time and positive word of mouth to resonate with audiences. If it didn't connect with them, its release timing wouldn't matter," Kaushal remarked.
"As the weeks went by, discussions about the film increased steadily. Throughout January, 'Sam Bahadur' screenings continued, which brings me immense satisfaction," Vicky added.
Directed by Meghna Gulzar, "Sam Bahadur" delves into the life of India's first field marshal, Sam Manekshaw.
The film also features Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles, among others.
