Dipika Chikhlia, famous for her role as Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s 'Ramayan' believes filmmakers should stop making movies based on the Hindu epic.
In a recent interview she criticized the trend of retelling the Ramayana with new angles arguing it distorts the original story.
Chikhlia referenced Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming 'Ramayana' with Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi expressing her disappointment in constant remakes.
She referred the negative reception of Prabhas’ 'Adipurush' in 2023 which was criticized for altering traditional portrayals such as dressing Kriti Sanon in a pink satin saree and giving Saif Ali Khan’s Ravana an unconventional look. Chikhlia said that these creative changes spoil the essence of Ramayana.
She cautioned about tampering with religious texts and suggested focusing on other historical stories like those of unsung freedom fighters, instead of repeatedly remaking Ramayana.
Nitesh Tiwari’s 'Ramayana' is highly anticipated with Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi set to play Lord Ram and Sita. Though not officially confirmed, Yash is reportedly cast as Ravana and other notable actors like Arun Govil, Lara Dutta and Sunny Deol might join the cast. The film is expected to release in 2027.
