Telugu actor Nani recently shared his concerns about the Justice Hema Committee report on the Malayalam film industry which revealed widespread sexual abuse and poor working conditions for women. In an interview Nani expressed his distress over the ongoing sexual harassment and exploitation of women both in the film industry and more broadly across India.
He said, "This has been bothering me starting with the Nirbhaya case... It never stops and it continuously keeps disturbing us." He added that social media often amplifies these disturbing events, making them unavoidable.
Nani also remarked, "I genuinely feel... we are in the worst possible situation," and that the treatment of women has deteriorated over time. Despite his grim outlook on the current state Nani remains hopeful about the future believing that the younger generation is extra smart and that society will improve.
The Justice Hema Committee report released this month detailed the exploitation faced by women in Malayalam cinema and highlighted the control exerted by a small group of powerful men in the industry.
