The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami has demanded an immediate ban on the film Emergency, claiming it misrepresents Sikhs. SGPC, the representative body of Sikhs worldwide, is particularly upset with actress Kangana Ranaut, the film's maker, accusing her of deliberately defaming Sikhs.
Dhami criticized the film for portraying Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, whom the Sikh community reveres as a martyr, in a negative light. He also accused Kangana of frequently making provocative statements against Sikhs and Punjab, which has hurt Sikh sentiments.
Dhami argued that the government should take legal action against Kangana for inciting religious sentiments instead of protecting her. He views the film as part of a larger conspiracy to depict Sikhs as separatists and demanded that the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw ban the film.
Additionally he reiterated the SGPC's request for Sikh representation in the Central Board of Film Certification which the government has yet to fulfill.
