Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently watched his 1998 classic Satya for the first time in 27 years during its re-release and special screening in Mumbai. Overwhelmed with nostalgia and self-realisation, he shared an emotional post on his official X account, admitting to tears not only for the film’s narrative but for his life and career since its release.
RGV acknowledged that Satya represented the sincerity and passion that initially drove him to filmmaking. Regretting his later works, he confessed that watching Satya could have prevented him from making 90% of his subsequent films. Inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s post-Godfather hesitation, he vowed to now create with renewed reverence and commitment.
Satya, a milestone in Indian cinema, explores Mumbai’s underworld through the journey of an innocent man drawn into crime. Its gritty storytelling continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike.
