Pakistani actors Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan have a large fan base in India and their film The Legend Of Maula Jatt is set to release in Punjab after a two-year wait. However the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) opposes its release in India. Ameya Khopkar, President of the MNS Cinema Wing, stated that the party will not allow any Pakistani films or actors in India and warned of strong protests if the film is shown.
He urged other states to also oppose the release citing ongoing conflicts and attacks on Indian soldiers. Raj Thackeray, MNS Chief threatened theatre owners in Maharashtra warning them against screening the film and mentioning potential consequences. He emphasized that while art knows no boundaries Pakistan is an exception due to its hostility towards India.
The film releasing on October 2 is the first Pakistani movie to be screened in India in nearly a decade. A ban on Pakistani artists has been in place since the Uri attack in 2016.
