The upcoming film Abir Gulaal, starring Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor, has sparked major controversy following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. The backlash is largely due to the casting of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, intensifying calls for a boycott of the film.
Ashoke Pandit, President of the Indian Film & Television Directors' Association, condemned the film’s release, urging a ban on Pakistani artists in Indian projects. He emphasized national interest over artistic collaboration and accused filmmakers of ignoring public sentiment, especially in the wake of continuous cross-border tensions.
BN Tiwari, President of FWICE, echoed the sentiment, declaring that Abir Gulaal should not be released in India and warning of action against its makers. The controversy has spilled online, with growing demands for a boycott. Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, Abir Gulaal is slated to hit theatres on May 9.
