The growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in filmmaking has sparked controversy, especially after two Oscar-nominated films, The Brutalist and Emilia Perez, raised concerns about the fairness of AI in the creative process.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is investigating AI's role in film production and may require filmmakers to disclose its use for the 2026 Oscars. While AI has long been used in visual effects, its recent advancements are prompting the Academy to rethink its impact on filmmaking.
In The Brutalist, AI was used to fine-tune the Hungarian dialogue of actors Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, leading to backlash. Director Brady Corbet defended the use of AI, clarifying that it was only used for technical adjustments, not altering performances. Similarly, Emilia Perez used AI for voice cloning to enhance the vocal range of actress Karla Sofia Gascón, further fueling the debate about AI’s role in artistic films.
While AI in visual effects isn’t new, its expanded use has raised concerns about fairness in the awards process. The Academy is exploring the possibility of mandatory disclosures about AI usage in future films. This could lead to greater transparency and accountability, as filmmakers face growing pressure to justify the role of AI in their projects.
