No Assassination Scene In 'Emergency'?

The release of Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, originally scheduled for September 6, has been postponed because the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not yet approved it. The film which depicts the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi focuses on the Emergency she imposed in 1975 and her assassination by her bodyguards.

Although the CBFC initially cleared the film on August 29 it reconsidered after receiving a legal notice from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) which claimed the film could incite communal tension and misrepresent the Sikh community.

Despite modifications suggested by the CBFC including altering dialogue and presenting factual information the board is now requiring that Gandhi’s assassination not be shown.

This unexpected delay has upset Ranaut, who has starred in, directed and co-produced the film. She expressed her disappointment comparing the delay to an “emergency” imposed on her film. The filmmakers are currently seeking a new release date and hoping to resolve these issues.
