Netflix seems to have an uncanny knack for landing in trouble with Nayanthara's projects. After facing challenges with her earlier film, the streaming giant is now grappling with the lackluster response to its recently released documentary, "Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale."
The platform reportedly paid a premium for the rights to the documentary, even offering 20% more than the usual non-theatrical market value of her films. Additionally, Netflix shelled out extra for exclusive wedding footage and photos to enhance the documentary's appeal. However, the investment has not yielded the expected returns.
The documentary encountered copyright issues due to a three-second clip used in its trailer, leading to a Rs 10 crore notice from actor Dhanush. This forced Netflix to exclude crucial footage from "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan," a pivotal film in Nayanthara's career, further diminishing the documentary's depth.
While the documentary succeeded in portraying Nayanthara as a "Lady Superstar," it fell short of audience expectations by merely skimming over her personal life and behind-the-scenes stories. Fans were left disappointed with the lack of insight into her love stories and untold tales.
This isn’t Netflix’s first problematic encounter with Nayanthara. The streaming platform faced a major backlash with her earlier film Annapoorani, which had to be removed due to a controversial scene. The fallout from that incident even resulted in the termination of some employees involved in the project.
With two bitter experiences tied to Nayanthara's projects, Netflix may need to tread cautiously before investing in her content again. The streaming giant is likely to enforce stricter checks to avoid similar pitfalls in the future.
