Tamil actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party leader Thalapathy Vijay has found himself at the center of a controversy after a Sunni Muslim organization based in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, issued a fatwa against him. The fatwa was issued by Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, the National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat and Chief of Chashma Darul Ifta.
According to the fatwa, Vijay has acted in ways that are anti-Islamic, and his past actions allegedly demonstrate hostility towards the Muslim community. The Board criticized him for inviting individuals who consume alcohol and engage in gambling to an Iftar gathering — an act they called not just inappropriate, but sinful. The organization urged Muslims in Tamil Nadu not to trust or include such individuals in religious events.
Maulana Razvi also accused Vijay of using Muslim sentiment for political advantage. Referring to his film Beast, Razvi alleged that the movie portrayed Muslims and their community as terrorists and extremists, portraying them as villains and monsters. He claimed that after tarnishing their image in cinema, Vijay is now trying to win Muslim votes as he enters politics.
The cleric further stated that inviting people who neither fast nor respect Islamic rituals to an Iftar event disrespects the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan. As a result, he urged Sunni Muslims in Tamil Nadu to lodge complaints with the police and distance themselves from Vijay. He also requested that Vijay not be invited to any religious functions organized by the Muslim community.
So far, Vijay or his political party has not issued an official response to the fatwa.
