The Sahara Group has strongly criticized the upcoming series 'Scam 2010 - The Subrata Roy Saga' as an 'abusive and grossly condemnable act' and is considering legal action against its creators.
The series directed by Hansal Mehta for Sony LIV follows previous successful installments about Harshad Mehta and Abdul Karim Telgi. Sahara's statement condemned the announcement as a ploy for cheap publicity and expressed intent to take legal action against those involved.
Sahara argued that the ongoing SEBI and Sahara dispute is still under Supreme Court consideration warning that the series could influence legal proceedings and amount to contempt of court.
They asserted that Sahara has never engaged in chit fund activities and that the SEBI issue was about jurisdiction over certain bonds.
The series based on Tamal Bandyopadhyay's book 'Sahara: The Untold Story' will explore allegations of financial misconduct against Subrata Roy leading to his 2014 arrest.
Sahara claimed the use of the word 'scam' is defamatory and damages their reputation especially since Roy who died in November 2023 cannot defend himself.
They noted the group's insistence that they have refunded most investors directly despite SEBI's order to repay funds with interest.
