The film Emergency, featuring actress Kangana Ranaut, is releasing today. Based on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the movie has sparked protests in Punjab.
In Amritsar, a large number of SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) members gathered outside a cinema hall to protest. SGPC has urged the Punjab government to impose a ban on the Emergency movie and requested the cancellation of screenings in all cinema halls in Punjab.
Congress MP and Punjab Chief Amarinder Singh Raja spoke out, stating that such films distort facts when made, and without a "masala" element, a film cannot succeed. He criticized the trend of making such movies to entertain the public, urging governments and the Censor Board to keep a watch on these kinds of films. He added that the portrayal in the film is not true and is merely a script.
