During a eulogy for the late Democratic Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, Vice President Kamala Harris mistakenly referred to herself as "the president," causing a notable reaction among attendees and widespread attention on social media.
On August 1, at a Houston church, Harris joined Democratic figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton to honor Jackson Lee’s contributions, including establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday and reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.
Harris praised Jackson Lee’s legacy and recalled moments with her and President Biden during the Juneteenth legislation signing.
Amid her speech Harris accidentally said “presi—” but quickly corrected to “vice president,” prompting cheers from the audience. The incident's video went viral, sparking various online reactions.
Critics accused Democrats of politicizing the funeral while some speculated the slip was intentional. Supporters playfully called Harris "the president" on social media.
Sheila Jackson Lee who died of pancreatic cancer on July 19 at 74 served nearly three decades since her first term in 1995.
