Mukesh Khanna, famed for his role as Bheeshma in BR Chopra's Mahabharata and 2005 serial 'Shaktimaan' recently reviewed Nag Ashwin's film Kalki 2898 AD starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan.
While praising the film's performances and scale Khanna criticized its Western oriented appeal claiming that audiences in places like Odisha and Bihar might not understand it.
Some Odisha and Bihar audience got offended with this statement as it undermines them.
Khanna also condemned the film for misrepresenting the Mahabharata. He pointed out inaccuracies, such as the scene where Lord Krishna removes the jewel from Ashwatthama’s forehead, arguing that it was Draupadi who instructed its removal after Ashwatthama killed her children.
Khanna questioned the filmmakers' authority over traditional texts and criticized their creative liberties suggesting that the government should review mythological films for accuracy.
He stated that Hindus should be offended by these changes comparing the backlash to that faced by Adipurush a retelling of the Ramayana.
Despite the controversy Kalki 2898 AD has become a blockbuster earning Rs 700 crore worldwide gross within a week of its release surpassing its Rs 600 crore budget.
The film also features Disha Patani, Kamal Haasan, Vijay Deverakonda and Dulquer Salmaan.
